How to Choose the Best Invisalign Provider in San Diego

May 19, 2026 · 7 min read · By Dentistry at the Promenade

Invisalign is the most popular clear aligner system, and most general dentists in San Diego offer it. But not all providers are equal — some have treated thousands of cases and earn elevated provider tiers from Invisalign, while others have done only a handful.

If you're considering Invisalign, here's what actually matters when picking a provider — and what to ask before signing up.

1. Check the provider tier

Invisalign ranks dentists by case volume into tiers — from lowest to highest:

  • Bronze: 10+ cases per year
  • Silver: 25+ cases per year
  • Gold: 50+ cases per year
  • Gold Plus: 75+ cases per year
  • Platinum: 150+ cases per year
  • Platinum Elite: 300+ cases per year
  • Diamond / Diamond Plus: 600+ / 800+ cases per year

Higher tier means more cases, more experience, and (usually) better outcomes on complex cases. For straightforward cases, a Gold provider is plenty. For more involved orthodontic work, Platinum or above is worth the extra effort.

How to check: Use Invisalign's provider locator at invisalign.com. Tier is shown in the search results.

2. Ask about case range

Invisalign can handle most orthodontic problems, but case complexity varies hugely:

  • Simple: Mild crowding or spacing — usually 3–6 months of treatment
  • Moderate: More crowding, bite issues, rotated teeth — 9–15 months
  • Complex: Severe crowding, significant bite correction, extractions needed — 18–24+ months

Ask the provider what kinds of cases they handle. Some general dentists only do simple-to-moderate cases and refer complex ones to orthodontists. That's appropriate — but you want to know upfront.

3. Look for 3D scanning and digital treatment planning

Modern Invisalign treatment uses an iTero or similar intraoral scanner to capture a 3D model of your teeth — no more goopy impression trays. The scanner also lets you see a preview of your treatment outcome before committing.

If a provider is still using physical impressions for Invisalign, that's a sign their tech is behind. Ask about their scanning technology.

4. Cost: get the full breakdown

Invisalign cost in San Diego ranges from $3,500 to $8,000 depending on case complexity. When comparing quotes, ask:

  • Does the quote include all aligners, including refinements (additional aligners if teeth don't move as expected)?
  • Does it include retainers after treatment, and how many?
  • Does it include follow-up visits during and after treatment?
  • What's the policy if you lose an aligner?

A "$3,500 Invisalign" quote that doesn't include retainers can end up costing more than a "$5,500 all-inclusive" quote from another provider.

5. Insurance and financing

Many PPO dental plans cover Invisalign as orthodontic treatment, typically with:

  • $1,500–$3,000 lifetime orthodontic maximum (separate from regular dental maximum)
  • 50% coverage up to that maximum
  • Coverage usually applies to both kids and adults

The practice should verify your benefits in writing before treatment. CareCredit financing can spread the rest over 12–24 months at low or no interest.

6. Treatment time expectations

Invisalign isn't faster than braces for most cases. Realistic timelines:

  • Simple cosmetic case: 4–6 months
  • Average case: 12–18 months
  • Complex case: 18–24+ months

You'll wear aligners 20–22 hours per day, swapping to a new set every 1–2 weeks. The "Express" packages (limited aligner count) are for very minor corrections only.

7. Questions to ask any Invisalign provider before committing

  1. What's your Invisalign provider tier?
  2. How many Invisalign cases have you completed?
  3. Can you show me before/after photos of cases similar to mine?
  4. Do you use an intraoral scanner for treatment planning?
  5. What's the total cost, and what's included?
  6. What if my teeth don't move as planned? Are refinements covered?
  7. What retainer plan do you recommend, and is it included?
  8. What's the realistic timeline for my specific case?
  9. How often will I come in for check-ups?
  10. What happens if I lose an aligner or break an attachment?
